Hi.

Hi! My name is Segilola and I'm a Nigerian-American blogger based in Detroit. I document my love of art, travel, style, books, movies, social justice issues, yoga, and Detroit. I hope you enjoy this window into my life!

I've been pretty fortunate with my skin, it's never given me much trouble even though I don't take the best care of it. It wasn't until my early 20's that I started breaking out and even then I never dealt with serious acne. However I am getting "older" and with a wedding later this year, I feel like it's important to start a good preventative regimen to smoothen and even out my skin. I have combination skin, dealing mostly with an oily nose, cheeks and forehead, but then I also have dry areas, specifically in between my eyebrows. I also want to minimize my pores and reduce the appearance of dark circles under my eyes because I usually don't wear foundation. One of my New Years Resolutions was to start taking better care of myself holistically and I think taking care of my skin is a good place to start.

The thing that I credit the most for good skin/healthy body is WATER. It's basically all that I drink and I have at least 5 glasses throughout the day.

Old Favorites

Cetaphil is what I've been using as a facial moisturizer for the past few years. It's lightweight and doesn't leave my skin too greasy. However I feel like it hasn't done a great job of balancing out my combination skin, which makes sense because it's not necessarily supposed to be used as a facial moisturizer. I would definitely recommend it as a body moisturizer, especially for people with very sensitive skin because it is gentle. My younger brother who has had eczema in the past uses it.

Nubian Heritage African Black Soap

I have been using this African black soap as a face wash of the past five years. It's incredibly moisturizing and gentle on skin but even though it's designed to be used on your face, it is still soap, and it leaves your skin feeling "stripped" of its natural oils. This striping doesn't help when you have oily skin because your skin just produces more to compensate. There are cheaper options for African black soap that you can find at a farmer's market or an African food market. I like this option because it comes in a bar form and it has added oats that exfoliate your skin as well as aloe and vitamin E (which reduces wrinkles). The oats can be a pit harsh if you use the soap directly on your skin so I would recommend getting a good lather with your hands or a face towel and then washing your face/body with it.

Dr. Bronner’s Bar Soap - Peppermint

This is my current body soap which I absolutely LOVE. It's incredibly moisturizing, nourishing and smells incredibly good. I also really like the almond bar! My fiancé was the one who turned me on to Dr. Bronner's products and he actually uses the soap as a face wash as well as a body soap. I would highly recommend it!

Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Collection

Ever since I big chopped my hair,  I've been using the Carol's Daughter Hair Milk collection and my hair loves it.  I used the hair milk shampoo way back when I was in college and really liked it but I rarely use shampoo in my hair these days and instead co-wash (wash my hair with conditioner).

Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Cleansing Conditioner- An amazing co-wash that is moisturizing and leaves my hair soft and easy to comb through. I love that when I put my hair in protective styles like crochet braids or twists it's still super moisturized when I take the styles down.

Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Refresher Spray- I use this spray on my braids when my hair is in crochet braids to help keep them moisturized and its been working really well for me. Again when I take my hair out of protective styles it always feels healthy and soft.

Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Original Leave-In Moisturizer- This is a nice daily leave in that I can use to nourish and moisturize my hair when it's in protective styles. I would recommend this along with the other products in the collection.

New Products

Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash- I've been using this face wash for two weeks and I can already see a huge difference in my skin. It does what it promises and really balances out skin making areas that were once dry more moisturized and controlling the oily areas. The stubborn dry patch of skin in between my eyebrows is clearing up and it doesn't leave my face feeling "stripped" the way the face soap I used did.

Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream - I'm not super impressed by this eye cream, mostly because i'm not sure if I quite need it yet. I was hoping that it would help reduce the dark circles under my eyes but I think at this point in my life that can be taken care of with a good night's sleep and a little concealer.

Carol's Daughter Almond Milk Ultra-Nourishing Hair Mask

Let me just start by saying that this hair mask smells like HEAVEN and it made my hair super soft. I used this for 30 minutes and sat under hooded bonnet hair dryer, and my hair was so easy to comb through and detangle after. Like other Carol's Daughter products it is paraben-free and contains no mineral oil, artificial colors, or petroleum It's definitely going to be my deep conditioner going forward.

Aztec Secret Health Indian Healing Clay Mask

This is actually a product I have used inconsistently in the past and it is amazing. Now that I'm trying to get rid of black heads and minimize my pores I use it on a weekly basis. I mix some of the clay powder with a bit of apple cider vinegar and leave it on for 15 minutes. As it dries, it begins to "pulsate" and tightens on the skin which can be a bit uncomfortable but is not painful. Finally when you wash it off, it leaves your skin feeling baby soft and smooth.

Native Deodorant Coconut & Vanila

Though it may seem silly because everything we use contains some kind of "chemical" I think it's nice to be a bit more gentle on your body where you can. Native deodorant contains no aluminum, which is linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s as well as paraben-free. I was a little worried about using this and working out because no one wants to be the stinky person in a yoga class. However I've been wearing it to hot yoga (90+ degrees) classes and still smell great after. It doesn't leave any residue on clothing which is also a plus and the scent that I got, coconut & vanilla smells incredible.

Peet Rivko The Essentials Travel Kit

A friend of a friend (who has amazing skin) started this skin care line for people with sensitive skin and had been posting about it on Facebook. I was intrigued reading about the natural ingredients in the products, and the fact that the products are plant based and promise to be soothing on your skin. I ordered the travel kit to sample the products, which are a bit pricey, and I am hooked. I love the balancing face oil and combine a few drops with the moisturizer and it's been helping my combination skin. I also love that the package came with a handwritten note from the company's founder Johanna. I am definitely going to keep using them.
