Ileke in Detroit: The Belt Alley
Detroit has a rich and thriving art scene and many parts of the city offer free, interactive art to the public. One example is tucked away in the middle of Downtown Detroit on Library Street. "The Belt" is an alley in which almost every inch of the space is covered in some type of artwork. There are several murals, paintings and sculptures throughout the alley, which spans the block in between E. Grand River Ave and Gratiot Ave.
Unexpected objects like garbage cans and benches have also been incorporated into interactive art. Even The Z Lot, a parking garage behind the alley, is covered in art. My mom and I ventured downtown in early August to check it out and we weren't disappointed. These pictures I took don't do it justice, it has to be experienced.
The Belt is located at 1234 Library Street, Detroit MI 48226. There is also a gallery, The Library Street Collective, that features art from many of the artists whose work are displayed in the alley.
