Ileke Travels: Kolkata Part II
I hope you all enjoyed Part I of my time in Kolkata which you can find here. Our next few days in Kolkata were spent exploring more of Suchandra's favorite places. On New Year's Day, we got up around 5am to visit Mallick Ghat Flower Market, which is a wholesale flower market right by the Hooghly River (distributary of the Ganges). The flowers are colorful and vibrant making the market a must see for photographers, even amatuer ones like myself!
We then took a trolley ride through the city and a horse carriage ride by the Victoria Memorial. We also visited the home of Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. One of the most spectacular places we visited in India was the Marble Palace, which unfortunately didn't allow any photography. The palace is a 19th mansion which not only has marble walls and floors, but also an impressive collection of Western sculpture, Victorian furniture and paintings by European and Indian artists. We also were able to drive by Missionaries of Charity Mother House, the headquarters of Mother Teresa's congregation.
The stunning views of the city that I took pictures of are from Suchandra's balcony. As I mentioned in the last post, Kolkata has many high rise apartment buildings and Suchandra happens to live in a gorgeous, spacious, three bedroom apartment with amazing panoramic views of the city. I even got a picture of Suchandra's dog, Wi-Fi, who is so territorial you almost need a password to get by her! We ended our time in Kolkata with a ride to the airport in one of the city's gorgeous yellow taxi cabs!
