Life Update: December 19th 2018
Hi Friends! I know it’s been a while, thank you so much for being patient with this not so consistent blogger. Life has been good, but super busy. I just finished the first semester of my masters in social work program and it took over my life in the best way possible. My program has challenged me in so many ways. It has expanded my definition of open-mindedness, made me examine my faults and biases, and it has also provided endless opportunities for reflection. All in all I absolutely love it, and I’m excited to see how much I learn, and grow in the 12 months I have left. While I’m on break I am trying to post as much as possible, and though I would like to keep up my blogging while school is in session, that balance can be hard to find. I feel like it’s going to be even more challenging next semester because I am going to start my field placement.
Favorites of Fall/Winter 2018
Bryan Stevenson Just Mercy - I read this book or rather listened to it (Thanks Audible!) this semester for one of my classes. I know its’s probably dramatic to say this but it changed my life. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world and so many black and brown people are serving excessive life sentences or given the death penalty for what should be considered misdemeanor crimes. They are usually from low socioeconomic backgrounds and not given proper legal representation at the time of their sentencing. As a future social worker I appreciated being giving the chance to read this book because it will help me better advocate for others. I think that everyone living in the United States should read this book though, because mass incarceration as it exists in this country is completely inhumane. The aim isn’t to rehabilitate people, but rather to make money and to punish and get rid of poor black and brown people. Knowing there are people like Bryan Stevenson in this world who work selflessly and tirelessly on behalf of others should give us all hope for the way the world should be.
ThisFem MiFem Sweatshirt - I have been LIVING in this super soft sweatshirt ever since I received it earlier this month. It’s fleece lined on the inside, and similar to my MiFem T-shirt it’s made with the softest material. Best of all it promotes equality!
Outdoor Voices Women’s Tech Kit - I had been eyeing Outdoor Voices sports bras and leggings for a while sine they are all over instagram and when they had their Black Friday sale I jumped on the chance to try them out. They are high quality, comfortable, supportive, and most importantly cute!
Madewell The Regan Boot in Leopard Calf Hair - i bought my first pair of Madewell shoes (The Frances Loafer) earlier this Fall and they quality of the shoes really lived up to the company’s name. I bought the Regan boots as an early birthday present to myself and though they are a little more bold than what I usually wear, I love them and the fact that I have more dressy boots for the colder months.
Apple Watch Series 4 - I received the Apple Watch as an anniversary gift from Gabe and I seriously love it. It’s great for tracking just about everything (sleep, exercise, breathing, steps, etc) and has been the best way for me to make sure I’m getting up at least once an hour when I’m in my three hour classes or writing papers all day. I have the 40mm in Rose Gold.
Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave In Conditioner - I initially bought this leave in conditioner when I started wearing my wig because it was the recommended brand for the hair. I loved it so much that I use it on my own hair and Gabe now uses it everyday too. It leaves your hair incredibly soft and easy to detangle. I also use the cleansing co-wash and the hair mask. I would recommend any of Eden BodyWorks products and I loved that it is black-owned.
Detroit is The New Black Woodward Zipper Tote - I have the off-white Woodward zipper tote and its the best bag for everything. It’s roomy enough to hold a 13-inch MacBook Air, books, a makeup bag and snacks. It also is easy to throw in the wash (though you shouldn’t put it in the dryer). All of DITNB products are well made and high quality and this is no different.
NYX Perfect Filter Eye Shadow Palette - I’m not usually an eyeshadow type of girl but I saw a lot of people wearing gorgeous copper shades and decided to try my hand at it earlier this Fall. I am in love with the copper shade in this NYX palette as well as the rich orange and brown shades. Overall I’m super happy with all the colors and the price!
Harney & Sons Classic Cinnamon Spice Tea - This tea is the equivalent of Cinnamon Red Hot candies and is the perfect hot, spicy drink on a cold fall night.
Thayers Witch Hazel & Rose Petal Toner - I started using this toner over the summer and it transformed my skin pretty much within a week. I use it now every few days, a little more frequently around my period, and it shrinks whiteheads overnight. It’s also helped me “shrink” my super large pores. It’s alcohol free so it’s not too harsh on skin and the rose petals make it smell divine.
Mend On The Move Shimmer of Hope Earrings - Mend on The Move is a Detroit organization that employs and empowers women who are survivors of abuse. All of their jewelry, like the beautiful "Shimmer of Hope" earrings, is sustainable & made from auto parts and salvaged car seat leather.
Michelle Obama Becoming - I finished Becoming by my forever First Lady last week and loved every moment of the memoir. I actually listened to the book on Audible which is narrated by Mrs. Obama and makes you feel like it’s just the two of you, best friends, gabbing over coffee in her kitchen. Her story and words are inspiring, and make you feel like you can do anything.
As someone who is allergic to dairy/lactose-intolerant, I'm so happy to be able to eat yogurt again! This yogurt bowl has Kite Hill Foods Artisan Almond Milk vanilla yogurt, Purely Elizabeth chocolate sea salt, peanut butter, nut butter granola, flax seeds, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries & bananas. It’s completely vegan and super delicious!
I'm hosting a instagram giveaway with Mend on The Move! One of my readers will receive a piece of jewelry of their choosing from the organization. Make sure you’re following me and @mendonthemove and leave a comment on one of my Mend on the Move photos sharing ways in which you support sustainability or organizations you love that promote equality/sustainability. I’ll choose from the comments by December 21st!
